At the same time, this course prepares me for the next academic level by providing the necessary knowledge, tools and resources. The course looks like a normal transition on my career as it connects my previous and future education background. I hold a BA degree in Political Science and a MA in International Affairs with a minor on Conflict and Security, and I soon plan to take a PHD on Negotiation, Mediation, and Conflict Management. As a graduate student, my main focus was international security and politics, including conflict analysis, prevention and resolution, peacebuilding, statebuilding and development processes, humanitarian and developmental aid, as well as refugees and migration with an emphasis on the Americas, the Middle East and North Africa regions. Currently, I do policy research, analysis and writing. I got two publications in the U.S. and Canada journals, including one article that examines ISIS war in the context of new war thesis. I have approached these issues in different capacities and both—theoretically and practically. Theoretically, I examined and analyzed the causes of conflict in the MENA region, including peacebuilding, statebuilding, and development processes while provided strategies and policy recommendations for the respective countries. I achieved this through Peacebuilding, Statebuilding and Development and the United Nations and World Order courses. The latter offered me an opportunity to study the UN system by analyzing the existing literature, conducting site visits and engaging with guest speakers on the colloquium class. As an intern at the Permanent Mission of Albania to the UN, meanwhile, I heard first-hand the UN approach on the underlying matters by covering the plenary sessions of the General Assembly’s main committees. Moreover, I developed my administrative, liaising and advocacy skills through attending and participating in high-level meetings, engaging in lobbying activities with the Member States and by communicating and conducting outreach activities with various stakeholders to the process. Previously as a journalist, I wrote on a wide range of issues–from politics to security to social ones–by closely observing peacebuilding and statebuilding processes of the UN through its mission in Kosovo—UNMIK, through communicating daily to international stakeholders, UN, EU, and NATO, as well as by reporting directly from the UN Headquarters in New York regarding Kosovo. That experience helped me develop my analytical and critical thinking, and prepared me for multitasking, working well under the pressure and in a fast-paced environment. Therefore, I am so excited to take this course and explore issues I am interested in. I am a freelance consultant that works with various international organisations. I have been working around the world providing technical assistance to electoral management bodies, capacity building in post-conflict countries and emerging democracies, helping to respect human rights and participation throughout elections. As well, I am a certificate coach that is developing and acquiring new skills to be able to be better equipt to help others and do my bit to build understanding. My professional vision as a member of WMO: I will seek to apply the knowledge and experience I receive at the WMO-in both personal and international level. In the olden days before the west came to Africa with the adversarial court systems, each culture had its own ways of resolving conflicts and which were mainly in the form of mediation. the advent of formal mediation process in Kenya, for example, has come with lots of significant challenges. there is a general belief that attending a forty-hour training is enough to make one a mediator as a result of which we have hundreds of people masquerading as professional mediators. Most of the trainings as designed do not equip one with the necessary skills and knowledge especially the understanding of the phenomenon of conflict. My vision is to raise awareness and add to the stock of knowledge available to train and breed wholesome conflict practitioners. I would want to be part of the professional conflict practitioners whose goals are to make our world a better place to live in.Country KenyaMy professional expertise and background: I am a business consultant and mediator, specialised in communication, business psychology and organisational development. He is also active in the development of mediation in Slovenia as a board member of the Slovenian Association of Mediators. Additionally, he is functioning as a volunteer in prominent social matters such as human rights, poverty abolition and gender equality. My professional vision as a member of WMO: Humans have been on this planet for tens of thousands of years. Following this fact, one would surely assume we are learned and wise, however, it may not (yet) be so. One important facet of this maxim are also human relationships and the human society in general. I strongly believe that human progress is not limited to a technological one, for it is crucial to develop also, for the lack of a better word, our understanding of human interactions and social events. An important part of the human world are conflicts and communication. The first will always be a part of our lives and they cannot (or should not) be avoided as they may provide us with opportunities if taken as such. However, it is up to us to decide how we tackle the challenges of a conflict in our lives, as well as on the level of international relations. The second – communication – builds our world(s) and can be a source of great disagreement and a basis which we can shape up our solutions from. Both together can translate to cooperation and this is where, I believe, our future lies and an important part of that is mediation which addresses a conflict wholesome using the basic human ability – communication. Someone once said that politics is the art of the possible. I would apply that statement to mediation by saying mediation is the art of the possible, though not in the realpolitik meaning of the saying but in a more literal meaning.Country SloveniaMy professional expertise and background: WMO Educational Development Advisor – India.
