The Story Told Once
Here is what happens to your research, from the first article to the annual book, told plainly, because it is worth knowing before you begin.
You write about one real conflict. It passes peer review, and when it is accepted it is published in the Conflict Insight Journal, the library and the record of the WMO, permanently under your name. On that day it takes its place in the Regions, under the country it concerns, and the count beside your name rises by one.
That number is the whole of it. Not a rank, not a badge, not a level to climb. It is the count of real, peer reviewed work standing under your name, and it can only be raised one way.
At three published articles the Journal invites you to propose a topic of your own. At seven, you carry the invitation to a standing seat in the Conclave. Those two numbers are the only thresholds that exist, and neither can be reached by paying anything.
This far, one gate stands between you and the record, and it is peer reviewed. Nothing else. Not level, not payment, not time. Write well, and the number increases.
Then there is a second gate, higher and narrower, and it builds the annual book. When a peer reviewed article matches a theme of the coming book, the Conclave invites its author to defend it: a real defense, with real questions, before researchers who have published as much as anyone. A single defended and accepted article may enter the annual WMO book on its own. Where an author has published and defended several articles whose content coheres, that work may be gathered into a chapter. And once a year, from all the defended work, the Conclave chooses the recipient of the William Zartman Prize.
So peer review builds the library and the Regions, open to everyone from the Associate level. The Conclave builds the book, and it is selective. We do not make a game of this, with points and a board to climb. The work is the reward, the number is the record, and the book is the proof.
